Tips to be A All Time Rummy Winner

You might say the rummy game is simple but is it really that simple? It is expected that a player would arrange the cards in his hands to form at least two consecutive sequences of which at least one has to be a pure sequence in order to declare a win. However, if you are not well acquainted with the game, you may not win or you may even make the mistake of making an invalid declaration which would cost you as much 80 points as a penalty.

Some of the steps you take while playing the game may be allowed but they may not help you achieve your objective of playing which is simply to win. For instance, it is allowed for you to pick cards from the discarded pile of cards (open deck), but you should desist from doing that as this would give your opponents an idea of the cards you have in hand. In likewise manner, you should be observant enough to know the cards your opponents are discarding. Discard the cards with higher value rather than the ones that have lower value and if you want to leave the game, it is better you do so during the beginning of the game as you would be penalized with lesser points than when you leave at the later stage of the game.

Top 5 Winning Tips for the Rummy Game

Get your pure sequence ready

A pure sequence is more like a lifeline thus, you should get it ready first. When you do this, it ensures that you don’t get the total points of all cards in your hands thus, your opponent won’t declare a win at any point.

Discard your high value cards

Getting rid of those cards with high points can actually help save your game. In as much as they are useful for formation of sets and sequences, hoarding the King, Queen, Jack or Ace cards would only add to the burden of your points in a case where an opponent declares a win before you.

Know the sequence pattern

Most people have this misconception that the highest number of cards a sequence can have is 3 cards but that is not true. A sequence (whether pure or impure) can actually have up to 4 cards. You also shouldn’t wait for the ‘right’ cards in order to start forming your sequence. It is advisable to place successive cards over two alternative cards.

Watch your opponent’s moves

This tip is very important for the rummy game. You should be very observant to know what your opponent is playing. Keeping track of the cards your opponent discards or picks from the open deck helps you determine which of the cards you would hoard and the one you should discard.

Do not quickly discard your middle cards

If there are cards you should be versatile about, they should be your middle cards. This is because the middle cards can easily be used to form combinations with cards of the higher or lower value. For instance, while the Ace can only make a run with 2 and then 3, middle cards like 6 can make a run with higher values such as 7 and 8 or lower values such as 4 or 5.
